Overview

In our comprehensive Web Developer programme, you will embark on a transformative journey to cultivate the essential skills and master the tools needed to succeed in this exciting and highly rewarding role. You will acquire the technical and problem-solving skills required to build fully functioning websites, as well as the behavioural skills necessary to thrive in dynamic, cross-functional software development teams. Additionally, we will provide you with access to secure an in-office job or support you with freelance remote work opportunities.

What jobs can I do after completing the programme?

This programme trains you to become a Web Developer, a person that develops, tests and deploys web applications and services. Graduates may work in tech startups, mid- to large-sized software development companies, and consultancy firms, as well as a number of other sectors.

They typically work as part of cross-functional teams, where their main responsibilities include developing, testing and finalising solutions, fixing errors, and coordinating work with the development team and other stakeholders. They are also expected to continuously grow their skillset, so they can stay abreast of new tools and technologies and increase their chances of promotion and specialisation in other IT roles.

Graduates will have a wide range of career options, such as: Web Developer, Programmer, Web Graphic Designer, Information Technology Programmer, Software Developer.

Who is this programme for?

This programme is open to individuals 18-35 years of age living in the Greater Accra area who are currently unemployed and not pursuing other education or training.

You don’t need any qualifications or experience to apply and we encourage applications from groups under-represented in the tech industry, particularly women and those under age 35.

We are looking for learners who like solving problems with a logical, step-by-step approach, are interested in learning software programming, and are passionate about developing a career in the IT industry.

Requirements

  • Be 18-35 years old
  • Living in the Greater Accra area
  • Have the legal right to work and live in the Ghana
  • A degree from a university, college, technical training or vocational institutes
  • Available full-time for the duration of the programme

What industry skills will you learn?

Technical skills

We’ll help you learn the technical skills with lots of hands-on, interactive sessions. By the end of the programme, you will go through:

  • Strategies for communication and collaboration in the workplace
  • Computing foundations, including computer hardware and cloud computing
  • Programming foundations in Python
  • Linux Foundations
  • Networking Foundations
  • Software development project basics, including tools and processes such as GitHub, Agile and Scrum
  • Software development foundations (based on the JavaScript programming language)
  • Application development foundations, including HTML and CSS
  • Frameworks: Bootstrap and React (for web development), Jest (for unit testing) 
  • Node.js
  • Rest API

In every job, there are key skills that will help you be successful. We’ll help you acquire the following skills:

What does a Web Developer do?

A web developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining websites and web applications. They work closely with clients or stakeholders to understand their needs and develop solutions that meet their requirements. 

Key responsibilities of a web developer:

  • Front-end Development: Creating the visual elements of a website or web application that users interact with, using languages such as JavaScript, HTML and CSS. This includes layout, navigation, and interactive features.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with other team members, such as designers, project managers, and content creators, to ensure the successful delivery of web projects.
  • Effective problem solving: Researching, testing and implementing solutions to resolve project related issues.
  • Coding excellence: Applying best practices to execute assigned tasks, consistently and proactively running tests to check code is correct.
  • Continuous learning: Proactively learning new technical and non-technical skills in order to improve the team’s productivity and results, and to develop career prospects
  • After their initial experience in the industry, web developers may further specialise in front-end web or mobile/desktop application development, back-end development, or gain experience on both ends to develop into full-stack developers
